Coaches vote against regulation

Coaches vote against regulation

Coaches have voted overwhelmingly against regulating their profession following a debate held on the subject earlier this week.

The Association for Coaching UK (AC UK), which organised the event, found nearly two-thirds of those attending did not support external regulation of the profession. The Association itself says it supports self-regulation.

The timing of the event coincides with what AC UK says is controversy surrounding moves to regulate psychotherapists and counsellors through the Health Professions Council.

At the close of the debate, the audience voted nearly three to one against regulation but if it became inevitable, indicated they were overwhelmingly in favour of regulation by a professional body rather than an external regulator.

Among the speakers were coach and author Judy Barber and the chief executive of the British Acupuncture Council, Mike O’Farrell. The event was facilitated by Gladeana McMahon, the new chairwoman of the Association.

A follow-up survey on regulation will be taking place throughout the membership of the AC UK and the results are expected next year.

The AC UK is a non-profit membership organisation that aims to promote excellence and ethics in the profession.
